Argentine Senate advances new biofuels regulatory framework

The Argentine Senate has reached a majority report on a new regulatory framework for biofuels. The proposed legislation aims to increase the mandatory blending percentage of bioethanol in gasoline from the current 12% to 15%. Under the proposed model, 6% would come from sugarcane-derived bioethanol, 6% from maize, and an additional 3% would be subject to competition.

Senators Carolina Moisés and Flavia Royón highlighted the strategic importance of this measure for the country, particularly for the northern provinces. The legislation is expected to drive investment, create jobs, and increase the industrialization of agricultural production by adding value to regional economies. The report is the result of extensive negotiations involving various political blocs, the Bioenergetic League, technical agencies, and industry representatives such as the Bioethanol Chamber of Maize and the Argentine Sugar Center.

The new framework seeks to provide greater predictability for the sector and align Argentina with the blending levels found in other Mercosur countries, such as Brazil.
