Argentine Senate reviews permanent commission for Malvinas and Antarctica

The Argentine Senate held a plenary meeting of the Constitutional Affairs and Foreign Relations and Worship committees to analyze several legislative proposals aimed at creating a permanent parliamentary body dedicated to the Malvinas, Antarctica, and South Atlantic issues.

Senator Agustín Coto, representing Tierra del Fuego, emphasized that the Malvinas issue is a fundamental part of the identity of people in his province and should remain a national matter beyond partisan or situational politics. He noted that the territory in question, including Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica, and the South Atlantic Islands, covers more than one million square kilometers.

Three specific initiatives were considered, including proposals for a permanent bicameral commission. Due to a lack of consensus regarding the format of the proposed commission, legislators decided to continue the analysis through a meeting of advisors.
