Argentine series ‘Cautiva’ depicts real convent abuse case
The Argentine miniseries ‘Cautiva’ (also known as ‘Confinada’) has drawn attention for its portrayal of spiritual manipulation and institutional abuse within a Carmelite convent. The psychological thriller follows Clara, a young woman who enters a cloistered convent at age 18 but remains imprisoned for fifteen years under the tyrannical rule of Mother Superior Cecilia.
The series is based on real events involving the Nogoyá Carmelite convent in Argentina. In the actual case, the prioress, Luisa Toledo, was convicted of deprivation of liberty and the application of torture against two nuns, Silvia Albarenque and Roxana Peña.
Leandro Bonnin, a priest from Paraná, expressed his reaction to the production, stating that he personally feels the pain and indignation caused when members of the clergy fail to act as signs of love and instead become perpetrators of harm. He noted that while the series depicts perverse and criminal elements that did occur, there are also many healthy and joyful religious communities that deserve recognition.
