Argentine shopping centers anticipate sales boost, urge tax cuts amid online platform competition

The Argentine Chamber of Shopping Centers (Cámara Argentina de Shopping Centers) expects a stronger second‑half of the year for mall sales, driven by year‑end promotions, the arrival of new brands and a modest stabilization of the economy. While the sector recorded a 5.9% year‑on‑year decline in April, officials note a gradual recovery linked to slower inflation, discount campaigns and higher transaction volumes, with regional variations across Buenos Aires, the Pampean region, Cuyo, the North and Patagonia.

The chamber highlights the growing impact of international e‑commerce platforms such as Temu and Shein, which have shifted a sizeable share of Argentine consumer spending online. In response, shopping centers are investing in the physical experience to retain foot traffic. The industry is also pressing the government to lower the tax burden and simplify regulations to encourage new investment and sustain the emerging sales momentum. One influencer captured the surge, saying, "Es imposible caminar, la gente no para de comprar, todos con bolsas y bolsones."
