Argentine specialists warn generative AI use impairs student learning

Argentine specialists have issued a manifesto warning that the use of generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Meta, in schools may impair students' ability to think and harm learning processes. Researchers including Fernando Schapachnik, Diego Golombek, Sandra Ziegler, and Nora Solari argue that these tools should not be used indiscriminately, as they often substitute for essential cognitive activities.

The warning aligns with PISA 2025 findings, which indicate widespread use of AI among students in Argentina. Approximately 52 percent of students report using AI applications at least once a week to assist with learning, writing texts, summarizing readings, or searching for information. However, the PISA report notes that students who do not use AI tend to achieve better results than those who do.

Maria Teresa Lugo, director of the Center for Public Policy in Education, Communication, and Technologies at the National University of Quilmes, stated that the issue is not a simple choice between using or rejecting AI. Instead, she emphasized the risks associated with using chatbots for learning without considering the complexity of the educational process, which could lead to negative long-term impacts.
