Argentine teacher celebrates World Cup win at Antarctica base

Gustavo Olivera, a teacher at the Argentine Escuela Provincial No 38 “Presidente Raúl Ricardo Alfonsín” located at Base Esperanza in Antarctica, celebrated Argentina’s 2‑1 victory over England in the World Cup quarter‑final held in Atlanta, United States. Wearing only the national team jersey and holding an Argentine flag, Olivera walked outside the base despite wind and temperatures more than 20 °C below zero, shouting “¡Vamos Argentina, carajo!”. A 17‑second video of the celebration spread quickly on social media, contrasting with massive street festivities across Argentine cities and marking the team's advance to a final against Spain.

The school, recognised as the world’s southernmost educational institution, is part of a permanent Argentine community on the continent that includes scientific and military personnel and families.
