Argentina university budget dispute intensifies over 2027 funding

A significant budgetary dispute has emerged in Argentina between the national government and the university community regarding the 2027 budget proposal. The Executive branch has submitted a project allocating approximately 7.3 trillion pesos to national universities. However, the National Interuniversity Council (CIN) argues this amount is insufficient, estimating that 11 trillion pesos are required to ensure institutional functionality and comply with the University Financing Law.

The conflict centers on the interpretation of a judicial injunction issued by Judge Martín Cormick, which mandates the application of specific articles of the University Financing Law related to salaries and scholarships. While university authorities claim they are still owed a 31.2% wage recomposition, government officials maintain that current increases are aligned with judicial requirements and have labeled the CIN's funding estimates as “unjustified.”

University leaders, including CIN President Franco Bartolacci, have warned that without significant modifications to the budget, many institutions may face extreme difficulty in opening their doors for the next academic year. The crisis impacts not only faculty and staff salaries but also research funding, infrastructure, scholarships, and scientific development sectors such as CONICET.
