Argentine universities protest lack of funding law implementation

University authorities, faculty, and staff in Argentina are protesting the government's failure to implement the National University Financing Law, marking 300 days since the law's passage.

At the National University of San Juan (UNSJ), rector Tadeo Berenguer and other officials expressed concern over the lack of updated funds for operating expenses, scholarships, and salary adjustments for teaching and non-teaching staff. They noted that the national government has ignored judicial rulings regarding the enforcement of Articles 5 and 6 of Law 27.795, which mandate salary updates and scholarship recompositions.

Simultaneously, the Argentine Federation of National University Workers (FATUN) organized demonstrations across Buenos Aires province. Protests included 'banderazos' at the National University of Luján and the National University of Mar del Plata. Demonstrators called on President Javier Milei to respect the legislation and address the ongoing financial crisis facing the higher education system.
