Argentina university workers begin 72-hour national strike

University faculty and staff in Argentina have launched a 72-hour national strike, running from September 30 to October 2. The protest, led by unions such as CONADU and CONADU Histórica, targets the administration of President Javier Milei to demand the full implementation of the University Financing Law (Ley 27.795).

A central pillar of the dispute is a requested 33.4% salary increase to compensate for lost purchasing power. While the national government has offered a 3% increase, unions have rejected this as insufficient. The conflict is also tied to a judicial ruling by Federal Judge Martín Cormick, who ordered the government to comply with a precautionary measure regarding university funding and salary updates.

The strike affects major institutions, including the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), and is being used as a precursor to the Fifth Federal University March, scheduled for October 15. In addition to the national university strike, various provincial teacher unions in Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos have also initiated strikes, citing concerns over school safety and insufficient wage adjustments.
