Paraguay and Argentina face major medical and university strikes
Paraguay is experiencing a national medical strike from August 24 to August 28. Organized by the National Medical Union (Sinamed), the protest seeks salary adjustments, better working conditions, and the regularization of approximately 9,000 contract workers. The strike has suspended outpatient consultations and scheduled surgeries in public hospitals, though emergency services remain operational. Health Minister María Teresa Barán stated that the government cannot meet the union's demand for a linear salary increase due to budget constraints, proposing instead a merit-based career structure.
Simultaneously, Argentina is facing a 48-hour national strike by university teachers and staff on August 27 and 28. Led by the National Confederation of University Teachers (CONADU), the movement protests against the lack of funding for public universities and the non-implementation of the University Financing Law. Protesters report a significant loss of purchasing power since late 2023 and demand immediate budget transfers to cover salaries, scholarships, and operational costs.
