Argentina university unions call national strike over salary and funding
University unions in Argentina have called for a 24-hour national strike on Tuesday, September 8, involving both teaching and non-teaching staff. The protest is part of an escalating plan of struggle by the Frente Sindical de las Universidades Nacionales following failed salary negotiations with the government.
Labor organizations rejected a proposal from the Ministry of Human Capital that offered a 3% salary increase for September and another 3% for October. Unions argue this is insufficient, claiming a salary deficit of approximately 31.2% to 32% due to inflation. Key demands include the full implementation of the University Financing Law, the updating of Progresar and Manuel Belgrano student scholarships, and increased funding for the university system.
The Council of Inter-University Rectors (CIN) has also approved a 2027 university budget project totaling 11 trillion pesos. The planned protest schedule includes a national day of public classes on September 15, an act at the Palacio Pizzurno on September 17, and a fifth Federal University March scheduled for the first week of October.
