Argentine university unions announce strike over funding law

University unions and faculty in Argentina have announced a strike lasting between 48 and 72 hours, starting Wednesday, September 30. The protest demands the full implementation of the University Financing Law (Ley 27.795) and a 33.4% salary recomposition to offset inflation.

This labor action follows a judicial ruling by Federal Judge Martín Cormick, who ordered the national government to comply with the law within five business days. The judge warned of daily fines if the administration fails to provide the necessary funds for salaries and student scholarships. In response, the government has indicated it will appeal the decision.

The conflict is part of a broader plan of struggle by the Frente Sindical de las Universidades Nacionales, which includes a planned Federal March on October 15. Unions have stated that the strike will only be suspended if the government implements the required salary increases before September 29. Some regional groups, such as the UNR, have signaled even longer work stoppages.
