Argentine university workers announce strikes over financing law

University workers in Argentina are escalating labor actions to demand compliance with the University Financing Law. Following a 24-hour strike, the CONADU Histórica has called for a four-day strike from August 18 to 22. Additionally, unions have scheduled a total stoppage for August 27 and 28.

The primary grievances include salary deterioration and the government's failure to implement the financing law, specifically regarding articles 5 and 6 which involve operational expenses and retroactive salary recomposition to December 2023 levels. While some unions are pushing for an indefinite strike and national marches, the government has maintained that there are no real reasons for the protests, with the Executive branch scheduling collective bargaining meetings for next month.

Mariano Hermida, rector of the National University of Tierra del Fuego, noted that the conflict persists as universities await the fulfillment of agreements regarding operational spending and salary adjustments. Santiago Comán, general secretary of Adunse, emphasized the need for unions to remain in a state of alert to defend working conditions and recover the professional standing of university teachers.
