Argentine universities launch national strikes over budget and salary disputes
University workers across Argentina have launched a series of escalating strikes and protests in response to budget cuts and salary disputes with the national government. On Tuesday, September 22, a 24-hour national strike was called by the Federation of University Teachers (FEDUN). This action follows the rejection of a 3% salary increase offered by the administration of President Javier Milei, a figure unions have dismissed as insufficient. Various institutions, including the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), have implemented rotating protest schedules that include faculty-specific shutdowns and administrative closures.
The plan of action includes 23 days of staggered measures and is set to culminate in a Fifth Federal University March on October 15. Additionally, university officials, such as the Rector of the National University of Córdoba, have highlighted the lack of funding for essential services, including university-run hospitals.
