Argentine volunteer firefighters announce national siren protest over debt

Volunteer firefighters across Argentina have announced a national “sirenazo” (siren protest) scheduled for September 10 at 10:00 a.m. to protest significant funding shortages and regulatory issues. The protest, organized by the Council of Federations and 29 provincial federations, is expected to involve approximately 1,000 associations and over 50,000 personnel.

The primary grievance is a debt owed by the national government totaling approximately $59,330,748,051, covering the 2025 fiscal year and previous periods. According to the federations, this amount—mandated by National Law No. 25.054—averages roughly $45 million per association.

Additional demands include: • Mandatory compensation within the new Federal Concessions Network (Decree 97/2025) for emergency responses on concessioned routes. • Full application of Law No. 27.629, requiring ARCA to reimburse VAT on the acquisition of goods, services, and equipment. • Streamlined payment mechanisms from the Ministry of Economy and the Central Bank for international transactions to manage high equipment costs.

In San Juan, all local stations have confirmed their participation. While the protest involves sirens, officials stated that active emergency services will remain operational during the event.
