Argentine volunteer firefighters hold national siren protest over $59B debt
More than 1,000 volunteer firefighter associations across Argentina conducted a simultaneous national siren protest on Thursday, September 10, to demand the release of withheld funds. The National Council of Federations and 29 provincial federations coordinated the measure, which was intended to be peaceful and did not interrupt emergency services.
The central grievance is the non-transfer of approximately $59.3 billion pesos in funds mandated by Law 25.054. These resources, which originate from a 5 per thousand surcharge on insurance premiums, are intended for the maintenance and operation of the National Volunteer Firefighter System. Officials estimate the debt averages roughly $45 million pesos per individual association.
In addition to the budget crisis, the sector is demanding the full implementation of Law 27.629, specifically regarding VAT refunds for the purchase of essential equipment and vehicles. They are also calling for compensation and reimbursement for services provided during emergencies on federally conceded highways, requesting that new federal concession contracts include mandatory agreements for monthly availability and expense reimbursement.
