Argolida Private Employees Union protests White Nights shopping events
The Argolida Private Employees Union has issued a protest against the upcoming ‘White Nights’ shopping events scheduled in Argos for August 28 and Nafplio for August 31. Organized by local commercial associations, municipalities, and the Chamber of Argolis, these events involve extended store hours to boost the local market.
The union has labeled the events a ‘provocation’ given the current cost-of-living crisis. They argue that such initiatives do not benefit retail workers facing poor working conditions and low wages, nor do they assist self-employed individuals struggling with high rents and taxation.
In addition to protesting the shopping events, the union is calling for a boycott of Sunday work and is demanding several labor reforms. These include the restoration of Sunday holidays, the establishment of a seven-hour workday, a five-day work week, and the signing of a sectoral collective labor agreement with wage increases. The union also criticized the state of local infrastructure, specifically citing the poor condition of school buildings.
