Argonne National Laboratory launches quantum sensing project
Argonne National Laboratory has launched a three-year, $1 million project to integrate diamond-based quantum sensors into high-energy physics research. The initiative aims to map electromagnetic fields with unprecedented precision, a capability essential for understanding fundamental particle interactions and managing particle accelerators.
The technology utilizes nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers, which are atomic-scale defects within diamond crystals. These centers act as miniature magnets whose energy states shift in response to surrounding magnetic and electric fields. When stimulated with light and microwaves, they allow for highly accurate electromagnetic field measurements.
Project lead Peter Winter noted that many high-energy physics experiments require strict, high-precision magnetic field mapping for various purposes. Researchers plan to develop prototypes that can withstand the demands of future particle accelerators, transitioning the technology from theoretical science to practical application.
