Argos converts 18,300 tons of waste to energy at Cartagena plant

During the first half of 2026, Argos Cemento, part of Grupo Argos, processed more than 18,300 tons of waste at its Cartagena plant in Colombia. The material mix included biomass, waste‑derived fuel, hydrocarbon‑contaminated waste and used tires, which were co‑processed to replace fossil fuels in the cement kilns. The plant achieved an 11.3 % cumulative substitution of alternative fuels, a 43‑44 % year‑on‑year increase, and in March alone processed about 4,400 tons, reaching a 15 % substitution rate for that month.

Plant manager Alberto Carlos Riobó said the results demonstrate how daily operations can contribute to climate goals, circular economy and reduced landfill disposal. Argos aims to sustain and expand the use of alternative fuel sources while maintaining safety and control.
