ARIA bans AI-generated music from Australian charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has implemented new rules prohibiting songs created entirely or predominantly by artificial intelligence from entering official music charts. To qualify for the charts, releases must be “substantially created by humans.”

This decision follows controversy surrounding an AI-generated cover of Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’ by Australian DJ Josh Fawaz, which reached the number one spot on the ARIA dance singles chart and climbed as high as fourth place on the general Australian top 20.

While the rules do not ban the use of AI, they require transparency. Record companies must use clarifying labels to indicate whether content is “AI Generated” or “AI Assisted.” Additionally, ARIA awards will exclude songs that have used AI in their production, regardless of the extent. ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd stated that the move aims to “promote the human nature of artistic creation” and noted that rewarding unlicensed AI content would undermine the recorded music industry.
