ARIA bans AI-generated music from Australian charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) has implemented new regulations prohibiting songs entirely generated by artificial intelligence from appearing on national music charts. Under the new rules, which take effect almost immediately, a track must be ‘largely a human work’ to qualify for chart placement and eligibility for ARIA awards.

ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd stated that the charts must remain a transparent measure of music consumed in Australia, noting that rewarding unlicensed AI output would undermine the foundation of recorded music. The policy also aims to prevent concerns regarding the manipulation of streaming data or the charts themselves.

These changes align with recommendations from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). The move follows calls from major record labels, including Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, to restrict the inclusion of AI-generated content in music ranking systems.
