Claudia Sheinbaum pushes Vatican for Pope Leon XIV visit to Mexico

Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, reiterated her government’s invitation to Pope Leon XIV, citing the pontiff’s recent encyclical on artificial intelligence as a global reference. Sheinbaum told reporters, “Vamos a insistir en la visita del Papa a México,” and noted that the invitation was first sent by letter and reinforced during a phone call with the pope on 12 December.

The invitation is being highlighted during the three‑day visit of Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin (4‑6 August). Parolin will meet Sheinbaum at the National Palace, hold talks with Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco, and attend a mass at the Basilica of Guadalupe. The Vatican and Mexico are also marking the 34‑35‑year anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations, using the visit to strengthen bilateral ties and discuss cooperation on peace and technology governance.
