Ariana Harwicz excluded from Granada literary festival

Argentine novelist Ariana Harwicz has been excluded from the Cultur-ALH International Festival of Art, Literature, and Humanities in Granada, Spain. The decision to withdraw her invitation followed pressure from the Red Universitaria por Palestina de Granada and other groups citing her public stances regarding Israel and the conflict in Gaza.

Harwicz has denounced the move, alleging that she is being targeted due to her Jewish heritage and that the cancellation constitutes a form of religious and ethnic persecution. Conversely, festival organizers and University of Granada authorities stated the decision was based on ideological grounds and a perceived lack of coherence with human rights, rather than antisemitism.

The incident has sparked a significant divide within the international literary community. More than 500 cultural figures, including authors such as Cristina Rivera Garza, Alejandro Zambra, and Lucrecia Martel, signed a manifesto supporting the exclusion. The manifesto argues that the boycott is a legitimate form of collective action against positions they characterize as denialist or justificatory of violence against the Palestinian people. Meanwhile, other intellectuals have condemned the move as an attack on freedom of expression.
