Ariana Harwicz exclusion from Granada festival sparks international outcry
The Cultur-ALH International Festival of Art, Literature, and Humanities in Granada, Spain, has sparked intense debate following the cancellation of Argentine-Jewish novelist Ariana Harwicz. The festival organizers withdrew Harwicz’s scheduled participation after receiving requests from the Red Universitaria por Palestina, citing concerns over public safety and potential protests due to her public opposition to cultural boycotts against Israel.
Harwicz has denounced the decision as “ideological extortion” and discrimination based on her Jewish identity. In response to her exclusion, renowned Irish author John Banville cancelled his own appearance at the festival in solidarity.
More than 350 cultural figures, including intellectuals and writers such as Fernando Savater and Margo Glantz, signed a manifesto defending Harwicz. The signatories argue that ideological differences should not be grounds for exclusion from public cultural spaces and call for a formal explanation and redress from the festival organizers. While the University of Granada distanced itself from the decision, stating it was made solely by the festival's management, the incident has ignited a broader conversation regarding freedom of expression and political censorship in the arts.
