ArianeGroup studies increasing Ariane 6 launch rates and manned flight capability

ArianeGroup is evaluating a potential increase in the deployment frequency of its Ariane 6 heavy launcher to address a projected bottleneck in satellite deployments. The company aims to reach a stable launch rate of nine to ten Ariane 6 missions per year starting in 2027. CEO Christophe Bruneau noted that discussions regarding a further ramp-up are ongoing with the European Space Agency (ESA) and a supply chain of approximately 600 companies. A primary challenge identified is securing the necessary investment to increase the supply of solid propellant.

In addition to increasing launch cadence, ArianeGroup stated that the Ariane 6 rocket is technically capable of being adapted for manned spaceflight. This capability would require modifications to both the launcher and the launch pad to ensure astronaut safety. The push for increased launch capacity and independent manned flight capabilities comes as Europe seeks to reduce its strategic dependence on third parties, such as SpaceX, for access to orbit and lunar exploration.
