Ariano Suassuna named Patron of the Culture of Recife

Recife Mayor Victor Marques has sanctioned a law declaring the renowned writer and playwright Ariano Suassuna the ‘Patrono da Cultura do Recife’ (Patron of the Culture of Recife). The legislation, proposed by Councilman Rinaldo Júnior, honors Suassuna for his role in defending and reinventing the poetic and popular imagery of the Brazilian Northeast.

Suassuna, the creator of the Armorial Movement, was a prolific intellectual, novelist, and artist who held seats in the Brazilian Academy of Letters, the Pernambuco Academy of Letters, and the Paraíba Academy of Letters. The tribute serves as a formal recognition of his profound impact on the cultural identity of the city and the nation.

During the ceremony, Suassuna’s grandson, João Suassuna, noted the deep connection between the author and the city, highlighting how his life was transformed after moving to Recife. The recognition comes ahead of the upcoming centenary of the author’s birth.
