Aricell CEO Park Soon-kwan sentenced to 4 years in prison for fatal factory fire

The Supreme Court of Korea has finalized the prison sentences for the leadership of Aricell following a fatal lithium battery factory fire in Hwaseong in June 2024. CEO Park Soon-kwan was sentenced to four years in prison for violating the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. This follows a significant reduction from his initial 15-year sentence in the first trial.

Park's son, General Manager Park Jung-eon, received a finalized sentence of seven years in prison. The court found that the executives failed to implement necessary safety protocols, such as monitoring heat levels during battery storage and conducting proper fire safety training. The company itself was ordered to pay a fine of 800 million won.

The ruling establishes a legal precedent regarding the definition of a 'management executive' under the Serious Accidents Punishment Act, clarifying that individuals with final decision-making authority over budget and personnel bear responsibility for safety, even if specific safety officers are appointed. The fire, which occurred on June 24, 2024, resulted in the deaths of 23 workers and injured several others.
