Arie M sentenced to eight years and compulsory psychiatric care for brother's murder in Gouda

A Dutch court sentenced 26‑year‑old Arie M. to eight years’ imprisonment and mandatory involuntary psychiatric treatment (TBS) after he was convicted of fatally stabbing his 29‑year‑old brother Peter M. in their parents’ home in Gouda. Prosecutors had sought the same penalties, citing a psychotic disorder that rendered Arie strongly diminished in culpability. The attack, which occurred on 26 August, left Peter with more than a hundred stab and slash wounds; he died on the scene after a brief attempt at resuscitation.

During the trial the victim’s sister criticised her brother’s lack of remorse, while Arie remained silent and claimed he could not remember the incident. Evidence included DNA from the knife, a neighbour’s door‑bell camera capturing Peter’s pleas, and testimony about long‑standing family tensions. The court’s ruling confirms the use of TBS for suspects with severe mental illness when the risk of re‑offending is high.
