Ariel Standen Levis, Chilean athletics legend, dies at 96

Chilean athletics legend Ariel Standen Levis has passed away at the age of 96. Although born in Punta Arenas, Standen was recognized as an ‘illustrious son’ of Iquique, a city where he was deeply connected.

Standen achieved extraordinary success in senior athletics after the age of 60. His notable achievements include winning two world championships: the 300-meter hurdles in Miyazaki, Japan (1993), and again in Porto Alegre, Brazil (2013). He also secured titles in the 100 and 300-meter hurdles and decathlon in Buffalo, United States (1995), and Durban, South Africa (1997).

In recognition of his career, he was awarded the Cóndor al Mérito Deportivo by the Circle of Sports Journalists of Chile in 1994 and was declared an Illustrious Son of Iquique in 1997. Beyond his athletic feats, he was known for his social work and advocacy for senior citizens.
