Aries Spears sparks debate over critiques of Bernie Mac and Martin Lawrence

Comedian Aries Spears has sparked debate following his comments regarding the comedic styles of several acclaimed performers. During an appearance on ‘Live From The Green Room’, Spears stated he has struggled to understand the appeal of the late Bernie Mac, noting that Mac’s distinctive voice and cadence often distract him from the actual jokes.

Spears also offered critiques of Martin Lawrence, suggesting that some of Lawrence’s material and character work in the sitcom ‘Martin’ bordered on “buffoonery”. Additionally, Spears mentioned that while he respects Tracy Morgan’s talent, Morgan’s surreal style does not always resonate with him, and he noted a lack of connection to the work of The Wayans Bros.

In response, comedian Scruncho criticized Spears during an appearance on ‘Shots Fired’, arguing that Spears’ public judgments of other comedians make his own work subject to similar scrutiny. Scruncho questioned whether Spears’ reputation is built more on original stand-up material or his skill as an impersonator, asserting that audiences primarily remember Spears for his impressions rather than his jokes. Spears has maintained that his remarks were personal opinions regarding comedic style rather than attempts to diminish the accomplishments of the artists involved.
