Arif Patel remains a fugitive in Dubai after £33m tax fraud conviction

Arif Patel, a prolific UK fraudster, remains at large in Dubai despite being sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2023. A multi-year investigation led by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) revealed that Patel orchestrated a massive VAT carousel fraud, stealing more than £33 million in public funds, with attempts to steal as much as £90 million.

A judge described Patel as “breathtakingly arrogant” and “totally dishonest,” identifying him as the leader of a “fraternal organised crime group” alongside his brothers, Munaf and Faisal. Before his flight from the United Kingdom in 2011, Patel was a prominent businessman in Preston, Lancashire, running the textile company Faisaltex and appearing on the Sunday Times Rich List.

While investigators and former HMRC officials view the 20-year sentence as a significant legal victory, the fact that Patel has not served any time in prison has led to claims that justice has only been achieved on paper.
