Ariège Underground Natural Reserve Planned for 2027
France will create its largest underground natural reserve in the Ariège department, grouping 29 caves across 32 communes. The reserve is slated to open in 2027 and is part of the national protected‑area strategy that aims to place 30 % of French territory under protection.
The project seeks to protect and showcase the region’s cavernous heritage, facilitate scientific research and boost tourism. The iconic Mas d’Azil cave, with a main gallery of about 420 m, contains traces of human occupation dated between 40 000 and 14 000 years ago and already attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. Mayor Raymond Berdou hopes the reserve will raise annual visits to 50 000, while expressing concern about possible restrictions on activities such as bungee jumping and fireworks.
Sub‑prefect Sophie Pauzat reassured that existing activities will continue and highlighted the involvement of CNRS researchers studying bats, salamanders, insects and spiders. The public inquiry commission gave a favorable opinion in November 2025, but the departmental council has issued an unfavorable view, and the proposal still awaits approval from the departmental nature commission.
