Aristide Le Dantec Hospital closure causes social and psychological distress
The closure of the Aristide Le Dantec Hospital in Senegal for reconstruction has been described by its Director General, Dr. El Hadj Mansour Diop, as a ‘social drama’ due to its severe human and sanitary consequences.
Approximately 1,200 staff members redeployed across twenty different health facilities have faced significant psychological distress. Dr. Diop reported that some employees have developed psychiatric disorders or experienced the decompensation of existing illnesses due to the sudden change in work environments and integration difficulties.
Patients have also faced challenges, including the need to travel further for care and disruptions in their medical treatment paths. While some departments have maintained continuity, the lack of specific examinations at receiving sites has complicated patient management.
Originally intended to last 18 months, the reconstruction project launched in September 2022 is now expected to continue until 2027. Delays were attributed to project modifications and pending contract amendments, though President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has reportedly moved to resolve these obstacles to facilitate the resumption of work.
