Aristotelis Chantzis returns to Prosfygika after hospital stay

Aristotelis Chantzis has returned to the Prosfygika neighborhood in Athens following a 73-day hospitalization at Evangelismos Hospital, which included 58 days in intensive care. His health complications followed a 140-day hunger strike that began on February 5, 2026.

Chantzis and Suzon Doppagne conducted the hunger strike to protest a programmatic agreement between the Attica Region and the Athens Municipality regarding the Prosfygika area. Their demands included preventing the implementation of the agreement, ensuring residents could remain in their homes, and pursuing building restoration through self-funding by the AMKE ‘Residents and Friends of Prosfygika’.

The hunger strike ended on June 24 after the Athens Municipality passed a resolution requesting the Attica Region to cease the implementation of the agreement. Upon his return to the neighborhood, Chantzis described the outcome as a collective victory, stating, “It was a collective struggle and that is why it was successful.”
