Aristotle University of Thessaloniki library to undergo €6.25M energy upgrade
The Central Library of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) is scheduled to undergo an energy upgrade project, with works expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The project, which has a budget of approximately €6.25 million and is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, includes replacing window frames, structural insulation, new lighting, HVAC systems, and the installation of a photovoltaic system.
The renovation is expected to last up to 24 months, potentially leading to the suspension of the library's main reading room, which provides 1,300 study spaces. This has sparked concern among faculty and student representatives, who warn that the loss of these spaces could negatively impact thousands of students and exacerbate social inequalities if adequate alternatives are not provided.
University Vice-Rector Iakovos Michailidis stated that while the exact start date is not yet confirmed, the university is working on alternative plans to meet the needs of the academic community. Some services, such as the scientific reading room, archives, and disability services, are expected to continue operating by relocating equipment to the scientific reading room.
