Arizona desert migrant deaths rise to 73 in 2026

The number of migrant deaths in the Arizona desert has risen significantly in 2026. According to data from Humane Borders and the Pima County Medical Examiner’s Office, 73 bodies have been recovered so far this year, marking a 24% increase compared to the 59 bodies found during the same period in 2025.

In July alone, 19 deaths were recorded, following 13 in June. Most fatalities are attributed to dehydration and exposure to extreme temperatures, though cases of hypothermia, drowning, and blunt force trauma have also been documented. Octavio Fuentes, executive director of Humane Borders, described the corridor as one of the most lethal in the world, noting that the deaths are preventable.

Humanitarian activists, including Dora Rodríguez from Compassionate Borders, suggest the increase is linked to recent deportation policies. They argue that individuals who previously resided in the United States and are being deported are attempting to return via more remote and dangerous routes to reunite with their families, specifically avoiding areas where they might be detected by Border Patrol.
