Arizona Diamondbacks designate Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment
The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment with 13 games remaining in the regular season. The move comes as the team fights for playoff positioning.
Gurriel, a key contributor to the Diamondbacks’ 2023 World Series run, has struggled through a difficult season marked by injuries. After recovering from a torn ACL in late 2025, he dealt with a left hamstring strain and a right adductor strain, limiting him to 51 games this year. During his limited appearances, he recorded a career-low .544 OPS.
Manager Torey Lovullo noted that while Gurriel’s timing had improved, it lacked the consistency required for the team’s current needs. By designating him for assignment now, the Diamondbacks avoid a $5 million buyout associated with his contract extension. Gurriel will enter free agency this winter.
