Arizona Diamondbacks designate Paul Sewald for assignment

The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated veteran right-handed reliever Paul Sewald for assignment. The move follows a period of significant struggle for the 36-year-old, who had previously served as the team’s closer.

Sewald, who rejoined the Diamondbacks on a one-year, $1.5 million contract, recorded 24 saves this season but saw his performance decline sharply after June 19. During a recent stretch, he allowed 17 earned runs over 10 2/3 innings and surrendered seven home runs. His ERA rose to 6.23 over 45 appearances this season.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo described the decision as “brutal” and “agonizing,” noting Sewald’s importance to the organization and his role in the team’s 2023 World Series run. However, the team decided to move in a different direction to address bullpen needs.

To fill the roster spot, the Diamondbacks are adding right-hander Zack Littell. Littell, 30, was recently released by the Washington Nationals and previously played for the Tampa Bay Rays.
