Arizona Diamondbacks move Paul Sewald out of closer role, explore bullpen committee

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo announced that the team will use a closer‑by‑committee approach after right‑hander Paul Sewald was removed from the ninth‑inning role. Sewald, who posted a 5.26 ERA and a 24‑27 save conversion rate, blew multiple saves in late July, prompting the change.

The club, currently tied for the second Wild Card spot in the National League, is evaluating several relievers for high‑leverage situations, including left‑hander Brandyn Garcia (2.17 ERA), right‑hander Juan Morillo (2.68 ERA) and right‑hander Kevin Ginkel (3.18 ERA). Other bullpen arms such as rookie Gerardo Carrillo remain options as the D‑backs seek to stabilize their late‑inning performance while remaining in the playoff race.
