Arizona Erases Over $1 Billion in Medical Debt for Hundreds of Thousands

Governor Katie Hobbs announced that Arizona, in partnership with the nonprofit Undue Medical Debt, has automatically forgiven more than $1 billion in outstanding hospital debt for roughly 671,000 residents. The program requires no application; eligibility is triggered when a person’s medical debt equals at least 5 % of annual income or household income is at or below 400 % of the federal poverty level. The nonprofit purchases debt portfolios from hospitals and collection agencies at steep discounts and cancels the balances, using no state tax dollars. Officials said an additional 200,000 notification letters will be sent to newly approved recipients. The initiative, one of the state’s largest debt‑relief efforts, reduces the estimated $2.4 billion of medical debt owed by Arizonans.

Analysts note that while the relief eases the financial burden on consumers and may improve credit scores, the underlying fiscal responsibility is transferred to the nonprofit and, indirectly, to taxpayers through the discounted purchases.
