Southwest US hit by severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding

A powerful storm system moving across the American Southwest has triggered widespread severe weather, including rare tornadoes, intense hailstorms, and life-threatening flash flooding across the Four Corners region.

In Arizona, multiple tornadoes were reported, including a large stovepipe tornado in Heber-Overgaard that caused significant damage to roofs and trees. Severe thunderstorms also brought baseball-sized hail to Phoenix and Yavapai County, with some reports of hail reaching up to 3 inches in diameter near Flagstaff. In Yavapai County, emergency crews used helicopters to rescue four people stranded on the roof of a vehicle swept away by rising waters in Wet Beaver Creek.

Flooding has severely impacted Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. The city of Hurricane, Utah, declared a state of emergency after floodwaters reached dozens of homes and RVs. In Colorado, mandatory evacuations were issued along several rivers, including the San Juan River, as water levels surpassed previous flood crests. In New Mexico, the National Weather Service issued tornado and flood watches for western counties, noting that recent heavy rainfall has saturated the ground, increasing the risk of rapid runoff and debris flows.
