Andy Biggs Leads Arizona GOP Governor Primary Ahead of General Election

Arizona held its statewide primary on July 21, 2026. The Republican contest for governor featured four candidates, with U.S. Rep. Andy Biggs – a Trump‑endorsed former Freedom Caucus chair – emerging as the clear front‑runner. Prediction‑market data showed Biggs at roughly 99.5 % odds to win the GOP primary, while his nearest rival, Rep. David Schweikert, lagged far behind. Other GOP contenders included businessmen Ken Miceli and Scott Neely.

Biggs’ victory will set up a November showdown with Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs, who is regarded as one of the most vulnerable Democratic incumbents in a state that voted for Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. The primary also decided nominees for key state offices such as secretary of state, attorney general and the newly created lieutenant‑governor post that will be filled for the first time in 2027. Concurrently, voters selected candidates for the competitive 1st Congressional District and other legislative seats.

Early‑voting turnout was modest, with about 18.5 % of registered voters having cast ballots by the night before the primary. Around 46 % of early votes were Republican, 44 % Democratic and the remainder from independents, reflecting Arizona’s large unaffiliated electorate. A legal agreement in Maricopa County to oversee the primary aimed to reduce procedural disputes that have plagued the state’s elections since 2020.
