Arizona heat warning spurs relief centers as temperatures soar above 110°F

The National Weather Service issued an Excessive Heat Warning for nine Arizona counties, including Maricopa, Pima and Yuma, with daytime temperatures expected to reach 110‑117 °F through early August. The warning designates the risk as “major‑extreme” and urges residents to stay in air‑conditioned spaces, use cooling centers, stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity.

In response, the Salvation Army opened ten heat‑relief stations in Maricopa County, offering free water and indoor cooling from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. over the three‑day warning period. The county also operates more than 250 additional cooling centers. Maricopa County health officials report 18 confirmed heat‑related deaths this year and over 200 cases under investigation, affecting workers, older adults and other vulnerable groups.
