Arizona, Hopi Tribe, and Navajo Nation sign economic MOU

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs, Hopi Tribe Chairman Lamar Keevama, and Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to bolster economic resilience in the Four Corners region. The agreement aims to address the economic challenges caused by the decline of the coal industry, specifically following the 2019 closures of the Navajo Generating Station and Kayenta Mine.

The Navajo Nation reported a loss of approximately 1,000 total jobs and a $50 million decrease in annual revenue due to these closures. The Hopi Tribe experienced an estimated loss of 1,900 jobs and an 85% decrease in total revenue.

The MOU focuses on increasing intergovernmental coordination, facilitating regional dialogue, and conducting strategic planning for potential coal facility closures. It also emphasizes collaborative research and workforce development while prioritizing tribal data sovereignty.
