Desert Southwest faces severe flash flooding and monsoon storms

Severe monsoonal moisture is triggering widespread flash flood warnings and life-threatening conditions across the Desert Southwest, affecting millions of people in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah.

In the Grand Canyon, recent flooding has resulted in at least one death and left many others missing. The damage has caused significant infrastructure closures, including the loss of 15 miles of the Arizona National Scenic Trail and the closure of major bridges, campgrounds, and lodging facilities. Water rationing has been implemented on the South Rim.

In Colorado, heavy thunderstorms have caused mudslides and rockslides, particularly along the Interstate 70 corridor, leading to road closures in Eagle and Garfield counties. Saturated soil in these high-country regions continues to pose a risk for further runoff and flooding.

In Utah, specific warnings were issued for Piute County, where heavy rain over recent burn scars has created a high risk for debris flows in various canyons. Meteorologists warn that repeated storms tracking over the same areas could lead to rainfall rates exceeding one inch per hour, rapidly turning dry washes and slot canyons into dangerous currents.
