Arizona officials dispute voter eligibility and ballot delivery status

Election administration in Arizona is facing scrutiny regarding voter registration and mail-in ballot delivery. Arizona Republican Party Chairman Sergio Arellano is urging voters in Maricopa and Pima counties to report delays in receiving mail-in ballots to the Republican National Committee and the U.S. Department of Justice.

Maricopa County Recorder Justin Heap acknowledged that some voters have not yet received their ballots, noting that approximately 1.9 million early ballots were delivered to the U.S. Postal Service on October 7. While the USPS stated they are experiencing no delays, the Recorder’s Office suggested that high volumes and operational changes could impact delivery.

Separately, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has threatened legal action against Recorder Justin Heap. The dispute involves the registration status of voters incorrectly flagged as non-citizens. While a previous investigation by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office found that only eight voters were non-citizens due to a Motor Vehicle Department glitch, Mayes alleges that 24 of 52 voters incorrectly marked as “Not Eligible” have not had their status updated ahead of the upcoming election.
