Arizona political candidates face campaign finance scrutiny

Democratic congressional nominee Bernadette Greene-Placentia has received three compliance notices from the Federal Election Commission (FEC) regarding her campaign's financial disclosures. The notices question a missing pre-primary report, an $85,687 increase in reported receipts, and various discrepancies in financial filings. The FEC has requested explanations or amended reports, noting that failure to respond adequately could lead to audits or enforcement actions.

Separately, the Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission is considering a $4.73 million clawback of public funds from three candidates: Green Party gubernatorial nominee Risa Lombardo, Green Party secretary of state nominee Duwayne Collier, and former Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Neely. An investigation by the Commission's executive director, Tom Collins, alleged suspicious patterns involving nearly 4,000 qualifying $5 contributions.

Reports indicate that many of these contributions may not have been made by the voters listed on the forms. Investigations found that approximately 75 percent of the reported donors were duplicated across the three campaigns, with over 2,600 voters listed as contributing to all three candidates. Several voters contacted by the media denied making the donations attributed to them.
