Arizona semiconductor and data center growth faces water resource challenges

Significant industrial investment in Arizona, led by semiconductor giants like TSMC and Amkor Technology, is driving rapid economic and residential growth. TSMC has increased its Arizona commitment to $265 billion, while Amkor Technology expanded its planned campus investment to approximately $12 billion. This capital influx has contributed to Phoenix leading the United States in multifamily apartment absorption, with 7,156 units absorbed in the first quarter of 2026.

However, this industrial expansion is facing scrutiny regarding resource sustainability. The semiconductor manufacturing process requires substantial water usage, with TSMC alone estimated to use 5 million gallons of water daily. Additionally, the boom in data center construction has met with community opposition due to concerns over the state's limited water supply, despite data centers typically requiring less water than semiconductor fabrication plants.
