Arizona State University launches content creation degree

Arizona State University (ASU) has launched a new Bachelor of Arts in Content Creation through its Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The program, which begins this October, is offered both in-person and online, with campus options in Phoenix, Los Angeles, and virtually.

The curriculum is designed to prepare students for the rapidly evolving creator economy by teaching them to build personal brands and produce high-impact content for platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitch. Students will study video production, podcasting, studio production, and on-camera presence, while also addressing the ethical responsibilities of digital influence.

The move has sparked debate regarding the legitimacy and value of such a degree. While some critics question whether content creation is a stable profession or if a four-year degree is necessary for social media success, proponents argue the program provides transferable skills in a booming digital market. ASU is not the only institution exploring this field; universities such as Syracuse, Quinnipiac, and Colorado State already offer related minors or certificates.
