Arizona State University researchers use AI to predict vaccine response

Researchers at Arizona State University have developed an artificial intelligence model capable of predicting how strongly an individual will respond to a vaccine before they receive it. By analyzing blood samples from 4,089 participants, the study identified specific antibody patterns that serve as indicators of immune readiness.

The research involved measuring antibodies against 185 different antigens, including common viruses, bacteria, and targets related to autoimmune diseases. Using deep-learning models to compare immune profiles before and after COVID-19 vaccination, scientists identified ‘sentinel antibodies’—such as those against Staphylococcus aureus and respiratory syncytial virus—that correlate with a robust vaccine response.

The study included a diverse group of participants, including healthy individuals and those with immunosuppressive conditions like HIV, cancer, and organ transplants. While some immunocompromised individuals showed weaker responses, the AI was able to distinguish general patterns of readiness. This discovery may lead to more personalized vaccination strategies, particularly for high-risk populations.
